The South
the southern states were virginia, north carolina, south carolina, georgia, and maryland. the houses in the south were built to show off the owner's wealth. they were often built with lots of big white pillars at the front of the house. they had lots of slaves, which in some of the states made up more than half of their population. the slaves were treated horribly. african americans' marriges were not recognized by the law. the south produced alot of crops, but the biggest ones were rice, tobacco, sugar and cotton. they would have giant cotton fields and the slaves would have to go throught and pick the cotton.
The North
Eli whitney invented the cotton gin. the cotton gin made the growing and picking of cotton easier. the demand for cotton was really high, but they couldn't really make a profit, because they had to go through all the cotton and pick all the sticky and poky things out. the cotton gin helped take the seeds off the cotton and helped the plantation owners meet the demands for cotton. and eli whitney was also very smart so he would teach the kids how to read and write. they realized that they needed to build factories by the water for energy. the north had a lot of factorys. alot of the youth was sent by their familys to go and work in the factories. but the factories weren't very good work places because of the fumes and the oil. life was completly different in the north than in the south. in the north everyone had their own garden to feed their own family. the oldest son got the family property and the other boys had to go to school and live on their own. the daughters were expected to get married fast to a rich man and then go live with him and his family.
The West
American System: Henry Clay (who ran for president but never actually became the president) thinks that the country should expand and become more powerful. the foreign countries dont like that idea, and neither do the southern states. 1- its going to have very high tarrifs. anybody who owns a company wants there to be high tarrifs so they can make a high profit. the south makes cotton and tobacco and buys everything else. the north makes everything except cotton and tobacco and they don't buy anything. so it benefits the north more than the south. 2- the federal goverment will keep land prices very high so they can make a profit. mostly it will be the land in the west. 3- they're going to have internal improvements (infrastructure). like roads, canals, and railroads eventually. everybody will benefit from it except the south.
Monroe Doctrine: a policy that says that the united states will not get involved in whats going on in Europe, if Europe will not get involved in whats happening in the americas.
Indian Removal Act: it's my expert topic, so look at my page about it.
War with Mexico: the main reason for the war with mexico was trying to get ownership of texas. america didn't start the war, but they provoced the mexicans to start it. the general of the u.s. at the time decided to walk down the border with a bunch of soldiers. they were waiting for mexico to shoot at them, but they didn't. then they "accicentally" stepped over the border, and mexico shot at them and the war started. the alamo is where the war with mexico started. with the texas revolution, texas won the first 3 battles: battle of gonzales, la bahia and san antonio. the battles continued and texas was winning. texas ended up winnning their independance and claimed themselves as a state. then the tready of Guadalupe Hidalgo (tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo in spanish) was put in place that settled the war with mexico. the mexican territories of alta california and santa fe de nuevo mexico were ceded to the u.s. the rio grande river was used to divided texas from mexico.
Gold Rush: in 1848 gold was discovered in california by james wilson marshall at sutter's mill. 300,000 people from all over the world came to california to try their luck at finding gold. san fransico was a small town until the gold rush. it became how it is today because it expanded to fit all of the "miner forty-niners". gold became harder to find in 1850 and miners became more possessive of the land around them. they drove out the foreigners tyring to mine for gold. a tax was passed for all the foreigners to be able to mine. but the americans attacked them to get more gold and the foreigners attacked the native americans. the native americans attacked back and many were killed.
